- On the occasion of International tiger day on 29 July, Union Minister for Environment and Climate change announced that 14 tiger reserves in India have received accreditation of the global conservation assured tiger standards.(CA|TS)
WHAT IS CA|TS?
- CA|TS is a globally accepted conservation tool that sets best practice and standards to manage tigers and encourages assessments to benchmark progress.
- Habitats which support tiger populations are the building blocks of wild tiger conservation and effectively managing them is essential for long-term survival of wild tigers.
- CA|TS is a set of criteria which allows tiger sites to check if their management will lead to successful tiger conservation.
- CA|TS is organised under seven pillars and 17 elements of critical management activity.
- It was launched in 2013 and forms an important part of T*2 program.
- Its pillars include “Importance and Status”, “Management”, “community”, “Tourism”, “protection”. These Five are part of Conservation Assured.
- Habitat Management and Tiger Populations are remaining criteria. These two are part of Tiger Standards.
HOW IT WORKS ?
- It follows two fold mechanism.
- Any interested sites willing to take part in the accreditation process will have to get registered.
- After achieving all the standards, they get certificate of
- APPROVA In this way, any conservation site gets CA|TS accreditation.

- CA|TS is being implemented across 125 sites in seven tiger range countries and India has the highest 94 sites, out of which assessment was completed for 20 tiger reserves this year.
ACCREDITED TIGER RESERVES
- ANAMALAI TIGER RESERVE
- It is a tiger reserve located in Tamil Nadu.
- Located south of Pallakad gap in southern western
- It houses tribal communities-malasar,alaimalasar,kadar, muduvar, pulayar, eravalar.
- BANDIPUR TIGER RESERVE
- It is located in state of Karnataka.
- It forms a part of Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve.
- River NUGU runs through this reserve.
- MUDUMALAI TIGER RESERVE
- Located in Nilgiri of Tamil Nadu.
- Moya river flows through it.
- It is a part of Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve.
- PARAMBIKULUM TIGER RESERVE
- Located in Palakkad of Kerala.
- Lies between Anamalai and Neliampathy hills of Western Ghats.
- VALMIKI TIGER RESERVE
- Located at Indo-Nepal border in West Champaran of Bihar.
- It is only tiger reserve of Bihar.
- Famous for rich Avifauna diversity with over 250 species.
- PENCH TIGER RESERVE
- Located in Nagpur of Maharashtra.
- Pench river flows through it.
- SUNDARBAN TIGER RESERVE
- Located in West Bengal.
- Accorded world heritage site status in 1987.
- SATPURA TIGER RESERVE
- Located in Hosangabad Dist. Of Madhya Pradesh.
- Denwa river is main source of water.
- It also houses 50 rock shelters containing pre historic
- DUDHWA TIGER RESERVE
- Located in Uttar Pradesh mainly across lakhimpur kheri and Bahraich district.
- Tributaries of river Ghagra flows through it.
- KAZIRANGA TIGER RESERVE
- It is located in Assam.
- Diphlu is the main water body running through it.
- Home of world’s most one horned Rhinos.
- KANHA TIGER RESERVE
- Located in Madhya Pradesh.
- It houses animals like-TIGER ,LEOPARD,GAUR AND SWAMP DEAR.
- MANAS TIGER RESERVE
- It is located in Assam.
- Manas river flows through it.
- ORANG TIGER RESERVE
- Located in Assam on north bank of BRAHMPUTRA RIVER
- It was notified as Tiger reserve in 2016.
- It has one of the highest tiger density in the country.
- PANNA TIGER RESERVE
- Located in Madhya Pradesh.
- Situated in Vindhya mountain range.
- Ken river flows through it.
WHY FAILED?
- Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve
- Ranthambore Tiger Reserve
- Corbett Tiger Reserve
REASONS:
- They failed to cross 70% point based on 17 criterias divided among 7 pillars.
- The external evaluation done by experts found them failing on account Of Habitat management and Tiger population.
- Global Tiger Day is celebrated every year on July 29th as a way to raise awareness about this magnificent but endangered big cat.
- The day was founded in 2010, when the 13 tiger range countries came together to create Tx2 – the global goal to double the number of wild tigers by the year 2022.
