Famous Birthdays in History on this day:

  • Madhuri Dixit (born on 15 May 1967) is an Indian film actress who has appeared in Hindi films. Often cited by the media as one of the best actresses in Bollywood, Dixit made her film debut in Abodh (1984) and received wider public recognition with Tezaab (1988).
  • Shiney Ahuja (born 15 May 1974) is an Indian actor who won the Film fare Best Debut Award for Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi in 2006. Ahuja was born in New Delhi. His father was in the Indian army.
  • Debendranath Tagore  (15 May 1817 – 19 January 1905) was one of the founders in 1848 of the Brahmo Religion which today is synonymous with Brahmoism the youngest religion of India and Bangladesh.

Death anniversaries on 15th May:

  • Bhairon Singh Shekhawat (23 October 1923 – 15 May 2010) was the 11th Vice-President of India. He served in that position from August 2002, when he was elected to a five-year term by the electoral college following the death of Krishan Kant, until he resigned on July 21, 2007, after losing the presidential election to Pratibha Patil.
  • 1907: Sukhdev Thapar, Indian activist, was born.
  • M. K. Menon (23 June 1928–15 May 1993) was an Indian writer from Kerala better known by his nom de plume Vilasini. He wrote in Malayalam. He is the author of the longest novel in Malayalam, Avakaasikal (Inheritors), for which he won the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award in 1981.
  • Field Marshal Kodandera  (28 January 1899 – 15 May 1993) was the first Indian Chief of Army Staff of the Indian Army and led the Indian forces on the Western Front during the Indo-Pakistan War of 1947. He is among only two Indian Army officers to hold the highest rank of Field Marshal (the other being Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw).

Notable Events:

  • 1873- The proposal to dissolve East India Company was passed in England.
  • 1878-Sivnath Shastri and Ananda Mohan Bose, under the leadership of the younger group of Brahmo Sama, rebelled and started Sadharan Brahmo Samaj.
  • 1998– Pandit Ravi Shankar, Sitar maestro, receives the 1998 Polar music award.
