- Taapsee Pannu (born 1 August 1987), also known by the mononym Taapsee, is an Indian model-turned-film actress, who mainly works in the Telugu and Tamil film industries. Born in a Punjabi family, Taapsee worked as a software professional and also pursued a career in modelling before becoming an actress. During her modelling career, she appeared in a number of commercials.
- Meena Kumari (1 August 1932 – 31 March 1972), born Mahjabeen Bano, was an Indian movie actress and poetess. She is regarded as one of the most prominent actresses to have appeared on the screens of Hindi Cinema. During a career spanning 30 years from her childhood to her death, she starred in more than ninety films, many of which have achieved classic and cult status today.
- Bhagwan Dada (1 August 1913 – 4 February 2002) was an Indian actor and film director. He is best known for his social film Albela. Bhagwan Dada was born in 1913 as Bhagwan Abhaji Palav. He was the son of a textile mill worker but was obsessed with films. He worked as a labourer but dreamt of films. He got his break with bit roles in silent films and got totally involved with the studios.
- Ira Dubey (born. 1984) is an Indian actress who appeared on the small screen and in Bollywood films. Dubey was born in Mumbai to Lillete Dubey, a Bollywood actress. Her sibling Neha Dubey is also an actress, and has starred in the Mira Nair movie Monsoon Wedding. She presented the television show Chicks on Flicks which used to air on Sony Pix.
- Ravishankar Raval (1892–1977) was a painter, art teacher, art critic, journalist and essayist from Gujarat, India. He worked for the magazine Vismi Sadi until it closed in 1921, and then founded the cultural magazine Kumar. The artist Ravishankar Raval was given the title of Kalaguru (in Sanskrit, meaning a grand master of art) by the well-known Gujarati author Kakasaheb Kalelkar .

- Lokmanya Tilak born as Keshav Bal Gangadhar Tilak (1856-07-23)23 July 1856 – 1 August 1920(1920-08-01), age 64), was an Indian nationalist, teacher, social reformer, lawyer and independence fighter who was the first popular leader of the Indian Independence Movement. The British colonial authorities derogatorily called him “Father of the Indian unrest.
- Harkishan Singh Surjeet (23 March 1916 – 1 August 2008) was a communist politician from Punjab, India. He was the General Secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) from 1992 to 2005 and was a member of the party’s Political Bureau from 1964 to 2008. Born to a Basi Jat family in Bundala, Jalandhar district, Surjeet started his political career in the national liberation movement.
- Ashok Vinoo Mankad (12 October 1946 – 1 August 2008) was an Indian cricketer. A right-handed batsman, he played for India in 22 Test matches. Ashok Mankad was born in a Brahmin family as the eldest son of Vinoo Mankad, who represented India in 44 Test matches, in Bombay. His brothers Rahul Mankad and Atul Mankad were also first class cricketers.
- Bikash Chowdhury (25 December 1932– 1 August 2005) was an Indian politician who represented the Asansol constituency in West Bengal from 1998 till his death in 2005. Prior to his being elected to the Lok Sabha, he was elected to the West Bengal state legislative assembly from Jamuria (Vidhan Sabha constituency) for four successive terms in 1991, 1987, 1982 and 1977.

- 1672 – The East India Company and the English law was for the first time intorduced in India. It was set up as directed by the Court of Judicature.
- 1846 – Dwarkanath Tagore, a Hindu philanthropist, died in London.
- 1882 – Purushottamdas Tandon, great leader and editor, was born at Allahabad (U.P.).
- 1905 – Horse drawn tram cars were closed down in Bombay. This service was started on May 9, 1874 with 20 tram cars and 200 horses. The very first day of its run, the number of passengers carried was 451 and the amount earned was Rs. 85/- on the last day it had 1360 horses and carried 71,947 passengers and earned Rs.4,260/.
