The dolphin population along Odisha’s coast and in its water bodies has increased but the number of Irrawaddy dolphins in Chilika lake has fallen.

Irrawaddy Dolphins

These fall under Schedule I of the Indian Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 and mentioned in the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Endangered Species.

Indo- Pacific Bottlenose Dolphins

Generally occur in shallow coastal waters of the Indian Ocean, Southeast Asia and Australia and is near threatened as per IUCN Red List.

The Indian Ocean Humpback Dolphin:

It occurs within the Indian Ocean from South Africa to India and is under Endangered category of IUCN Red List.

The striped dolphin

It is found in abundance in the North and South Atlantic Oceans, including the Mediterranean and Gulf of Mexico, the Indian Ocean, and the Pacific Ocean and comes under least concern category of IUCN Red List.

The finless dolphins

It originally inhabited in salt water niches along the coast of the Indo-Pacific Ocean and comes under critically endangered category of IUCN Red List.

208 Irrawaddy, 155 Bottlenose, 332 Humpback, 13 Stripped, three Fineless and 15 Spinner dolphins were spotted during the census drive.
