- Saira Banu (born 23 August 1944), also known as Saira Bano, is an Indian Bollywood actress and the wife of the film actor Dilip Kumar. She acted in many Bollywood films between 1960 and 1980. Saira Banu was born in India to actress of 30s-40s, and the granddaughter of a courtesan Chamiyan Bai, also known as Shamshad Begum of Delhi.
- Gauhar Khan (born 23 August 1981, Pune, Maharashtra) is an Indian model, VJ and actress, most known for her prominent role in Ranbir Kapoor starrer, Rocket Singh: Salesman of the Year (2009). She is the sister of television actress Nigaar Z Khan. In 2010, she joined the cast of the first-ever Bollywood musical, Zangoora: The Gypsy Prince at Kingdom of Dreams, Gurgaon.
- Dr. Balram Jakhar (born 23 August 1923) is a well-known Indian politician and parliamentarian and former Governor of Madhya Pradesh. He was born in Jat family of Jakhar clan in Panchkosi village of Firozpur district in Punjab now in Abohar on 23 August 1923. His father’s name is Chaudhari Rajaram Jakhar and mother’s name is Patodevi Jakhar.

- Dr. K. Ayyappa Paniker, sometimes spelt “Ayyappa Panicker” (September 12, 1930 – August 23, 2006) was an influential Malayalam poet, literary critic, and an academic and a scholar in modern and post-modern literary theories as well as ancient Indian aesthetics and literary traditions.
- Phanindranath Rangarajan Kumaramangalam (May 12, 1952 – August 23, 2000) was a prominent politician of the Indian National Congress and later the Bharatiya Janata Party and a Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha) from the Salem constituency from 1984 to 1996 and Tiruchirapalli constituency from 1998 to 2000.
- A N Murthy Rao (June 16, 1900—August 23, 2003) was an eminent Kannada author. Bearing a rather long name of Akkihebbalu Narasimha Murthy Rao, he indeed lived to a ripe old age. Though popular for his atheistic thoughts and writings, he has also written dramas, short stories and in addition headed a couple of government assignments.

1872 – Tanguturi Prakasam, great lawyer, journalist, nationalist, politician, leader, social reformer and former chief minister of Andhra Pradesh, was born at Kanuparthi village in Ongole district in Andhra Pradesh.
1933 – Mahatma Gandhi was released from government detention in the Poona Civil Hospital after doctors warned that his fast was endangering his life. Gandhi, who undertook the fast eight days ago in protest over being arrested again by British authorities, weighed 90 pounds at the time of his release. There was considerable speculation over what the nationalist leader would do upon regaining his strength, but the common assumption was that he would be arrested again by the British authorities if he resumed his civil disobedience.
