  • Satyajit Ray (2 May 1921 – 23 April 1992) was an Indian filmmaker. He is regarded as one of the greatest auteurs of 20th century cinema. Ray was born in the city of Kolkata into a Bengali family prominent in the world of arts and literature. Starting his career as a commercial artist, Ray was drawn into independent film making.
  • Engelbert Humperdinck (born Arnold George Dorsey, 2 May 1936) is an Anglo-Indian pop singer, best known for his number one hits “Release Me” and “The Last Waltz”, as well as “After the Lovin'” and “A Man Without Love”. Born in Madras, India, as a child Dorsey moved to Leicester, England, where he took an early interest in music. Initially playing the saxophone in nightclubs.

Death anniversaries on 2nd May:

  • K. Mathew (3 January 1911 – 2 May 1992) was a Judge of the Supreme Court of India highly regarded for his scholarship and for his seminal contribution to the Constitutional and Administrative law in India.
  • Francis Robert  (1907 – May 2, 1974) was editor of many prominent newspapers in post-Independence India, including The Indian Express. Born in Mumbai of Goan descent, the commercial-capital of India then known as Bombay in 1907, Moraes was the son of Anthony Xavier Moraes, a Goan civil engineer.

  • 1908-Police in Calcutta discover a cache of explosives for use in alleged anarchist plot.
  • 1926-Hindu women gain right to seek elected office.

  • 1953-Declaration by the PM that India was opposed to joining any power-block in the event of another war.
  • 1974-700 union leaders arrested in a move to avert a rail strike in New Delhi.
