HOW MUCH IS THIS WORTH
WHAT JUST HAPPENED?
- The Geological Survey of India and Uttar Pradesh Directorate of Geology and Mining have confirmed that a large gold reserve of around 3,500 tonnes has been found in Sonbhadra district.
NUMBERS
- GSI estimated gold deposits of 2700 million tonnes in Sonpahadi while 650 million tonnes in Hardi filed
- This is around five times the current gold reserves of the country which stands at around 626 tonne.
SONBHADRA
- Sonbhadra or Sonebhadra is the second largest district of Uttar Pradesh, India. Sonbhadra is the only district in India which borders four states namely Madhya Pradesh in west, Chhattishgarh in south, Jharkhand in south east and Bihar in the east.
PROCESS SO FAR
- A seven-member team has been formed by the administration for auction of blocks through tendering. The team will map the goldmine area, conduct geo-tagging and submit its report.
- The government will start the auction process as soon as compensation payout and necessary approvals are granted
- Reports suggest that the GSI and the UPDGM have been exploring for the reserves in the area for over a decade and had confirmed the presence of gold in the ground eight years ago. The GSI team has been gunning for the reserves suggesting that there is another 600- tonne ore in Hardi block.
- As per reports, officials are also exploring the possibility of rare minerals like uranium being present in the area.
- Following the discovery, the exploration of the goldmines and, possibly, other minerals as well, is set to provide a major impetus to the revenues of the country’s most populous state and also create jobs in the most backward districts of Uttar Pradesh.
