The copyright to Subramania Bharati

 Subramania Bharati, also known as Bharathiyar (11December 1882 – 11 September 1921) was a Tamil writer, poet and journalist, and Indian independence activist and
social reformer from Tamil Nadu.
 Popularly known as “Mahakavi Bharati”, he was a pioneer of modern Tamil poetry and is considered one of the greatest Tamil literary figures of all time
 Subramania Bharati, the modern Tamil poet who attained posthumous fame and whose books remain bestsellers, may not have recognised “the © symbol that figures in the imprint pages of every published book today”.
 Bharati died poor, with half his works uncollected or unpublished in his lifetime.
 Legal battles broke out after his death filmmakers and publishers vied to acquire copyright to his works.

 Many people demanded that his writings be made public property.
 The early 1930s saw what has been described as a „music boom‟
 Finally, the Tamil Nadu government acquired rights to his poems and then made them
available to the public in 1954.
 This was quite a remarkable move in literary history, as “this was the first time ever,
anywhere in the world, that the state acquired the copyright of a writer and
put all his writings in the public domain.”

Continental ambition

 A single market will enable Africa to transform into a supplier of manufactured goods
 The African Continental Free Trade Area (ACFTA) is a potential game
changer for the world‟s poorest region.
 The pact signed by 44 of the 55-member African Union (AU) in March seeks to create a
single market in goods and services, free movement of persons and investment, and
eventually a customs union with a common external tariff
 Recent years, intra-regional commerce as a share of Africa‟s overall trade has risen to 15%
from 8% in 2011, points out Moody‟s, the ratings agency.
 But then exports within Africa accounted for a mere 18% of the continent‟s total exports
in 2016, compared to 59% and 69% of intra-regional exports in Asia and Europe
 Number of African countries ranking among the world‟s fastest growing economies over
the last two decades, ACFTA could tap into the immense potential for closer trade integration
 Lead to sustained economic growth and employment generation
 ACFTA aims to abolish import duties on 90% of goods, currently averaging at 6%,
which is projected to raise internal trade by over 50%.

GST‟s Complicated

 The new compliance system and a proposal for cess on sugar send the wrong signals
 Collections from the goods and services- 1 lakh crore in April
 Last week the Council decided to introduce a new compliance system under
which a single monthly GST return will have to be submitted by firms
 Cesses and surcharges, barring the compensation cess for funding States‟
revenue losses for five years
 Lastly, decision to make the GSTN a 100% government-owned firm, instead of
the present structure with 51% private ownership
 Explains neither how this will address data security concerns nor the impact on t
he Network‟s functional efficiency, which was the original stated intent for givin
g private players an upper hand in operations
