The copyright to Subramania Bharati
Subramania Bharati, also known as Bharathiyar (11December 1882 – 11 September 1921) was a Tamil writer, poet and journalist, and Indian independence activist and
social reformer from Tamil Nadu.
Popularly known as “Mahakavi Bharati”, he was a pioneer of modern Tamil poetry and is considered one of the greatest Tamil literary figures of all time
Subramania Bharati, the modern Tamil poet who attained posthumous fame and whose books remain bestsellers, may not have recognised “the © symbol that figures in the imprint pages of every published book today”.
Bharati died poor, with half his works uncollected or unpublished in his lifetime.
Legal battles broke out after his death filmmakers and publishers vied to acquire copyright to his works.
Many people demanded that his writings be made public property.
The early 1930s saw what has been described as a „music boom‟
Finally, the Tamil Nadu government acquired rights to his poems and then made them
available to the public in 1954.
This was quite a remarkable move in literary history, as “this was the first time ever,
anywhere in the world, that the state acquired the copyright of a writer and
put all his writings in the public domain.”
Continental ambition

ACFTA aims to abolish import duties on 90% of goods, currently averaging at 6%,
which is projected to raise internal trade by over 50%.
