Why in NEWS?

  • NTPC Renewable Energy Ltd , a 100% subsidiary of NTPC, has received the go-ahead from Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) to set up 4750 MW renewable energy park at Rann of Kutch in Khavada, Gujarat.
  • This will be India’s largest solar park to be built by the largest power producer of the country.

  • The capacity will be 4,750-megawatt (MW).
  • It has been sanctioned under Ultra Mega Solar Power Projects (UMPP) of Solar Park Scheme.
  • It will become country’s largest solar park to be built by NTPC of the country.
  • India’s largest Floating Solar plant of 10 MW on the reservoir of Simhadri Thermal Power Plant, Andhra Pradesh is also commissioned by NTPC.
  • Another 100 MW Floating Solar Project on the reservoir of Ramagundam Thermal Power Plant, Telangana is in the advanced stage of implementation.

  • NTPC RE has recently signed an MoU with UT, Ladakh and Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC) for the generation of green hydrogen and deployment on Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles (FCEV) buses.
  • The signing of the MoU was also marked with the inauguration of NTPC’s first solar installations in Leh in form of solar trees and a solar carport (Solar carports are ground-mounted canopy constructions that stretch out over your car parking spaces).

  • Ultra Mega Solar Power Projects are a series of solar power projects planned by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy with a minimum capacity of 500 MW.
  • launched by the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy in 2014.
  • At least 25 Solar Parks and Ultra Mega Solar Power Projects will be set up.
  • Targets under this scheme have been enhanced from 20,000 MW to 40,000 MW in 2017 to be achieved by 2021-22.
  • Solar Photovoltaic: Solar photovoltaic (SPV) cells convert solar radiation (sunlight) into electricity. A solar cell is a semi-conducting device made of silicon and/or other materials, which, when exposed to sunlight, generates electricity.
  • Solar thermal: Solar Thermal Power systems, also known as Concentrating Solar Power systems, use concentrated solar radiation as a high temperature energy source to produce electricity using thermal route.
