- Recently, UNCTAD released the annual LDC report which provides a comprehensive and authoritative source of socio-economic analysis and data on the world´s most impoverished countries.
- The report is intended for a broad readership of governments, policy makers, researchers and all those involved with LDCs´ development policies.
UNCTAD
- United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) was established in 1964 to promote development-friendly integration of developing countries into the world economy.
- UNCTAD is the part of the United Nations Secretariat dealing with trade, investment, and development issues. The organization’s goals are to: “maximize the trade, investment and development opportunities of developing countries and assist them in their efforts to integrate into the world economy on an equitable basis”.
- UNCTAD is a permanent intergovernmental body headquartered at Geneva.

What is LDC?
The identification of LDCs is currently based on three criteria
- Income criterion
- Based on a three-year average estimate of GNI per capita, based on the World Bank Atlas method (under $1,025 for inclusion, above $ 1,230 for graduation)
- Human Assets Index (HAI)
- (a) nutrition: percentage of population undernourished; (b) health: mortality rate for children aged five years or under; (c) education: the gross secondary school enrolment ratio; and (d) adult literacy
- Economic Vulnerability Index (EVI)
- (a) population size; (b) remoteness; (c) merchandise export concentration; (d) share of agriculture, forestry and fisheries; (e) share of population in low elevated coastal zones; (f) instability of exports of goods and services; (g) victims of natural disasters; and (h) instability of agricultural production
