What has happened?
- Prohibitory orders banning the gathering of people (Section 144) were imposed in Tripura’s Dharmanagar district on Wednesday,
- A day after a mosque was allegedly vandalised during a Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) rally taken out to protest against violence against Hindus in Bangladesh.
- According to locals, miscreants vandalised a mosque and several shops in Chamtila area in north Tripura district on Tuesday evening.
- Central paramilitary forces along with state police and Tripura State Rifles (TSR) personnel have also been deployed in the area.
Why this violence?
- A mosque was allegedly attacked during a VHP gathering on Tuesday, that had been called to protest against the recent cases of violence against Hindus in Bangladesh.
- “Vishwa Hindu Parishad activists took out a rally to protest against the recent violence in Bangladesh.
- A group of people threw stones and damaged a door of a mosque in Chamtilla area during the rally.
- Security forces rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control,” district superintendent of police Bhanupada Chakraborty said.
- Also several shops were set ablaze in the Chamtilla area in North Tripura district during a rally by the VHP.
- The North Tripura District Police said that such incidents were happening in the last one week, however, said that the situation was under control.
- “All the mosques across the state are under security cover now.
- We are keeping a vigil on the situation.”
- The Communist Party of India (Marxist) condemned the incident.
- A group of miscreants were active to disrupt communal harmony in the state, the Left party said and appealed to all sections of the people to maintain peace.
- In a statement, the CPI(M) also demanded adequate compensation for the shop owners.
- The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday set up a five-member committee to probe into the incidents of violence.
- The party’s state in-charge Vinod Sonkar said that the committee contains people from minority communities.
- “The committee has been asked to visit the (violence-hit) areas and submit its report in the next two or three days.
- Since our political opponents accuse us of being biased, we asked the members of the minority cell to probe the incident,” Sonkar, a parliamentarian, told.
