ASSAMESE LANGUAGE
•Assam – an official language.
• It is also spoken in parts of Arunachal Pradesh and other northeast Indian states.

Two scheduled languages have witnessed a drop in the number of people referring to
them as their mother tongues:
DIP IN ASSAMESE SPEAKERS
As per the data released by the Census authorities, the percentage of Assamese, Rabha and Bodo language speakers in the state has further dwindled since the last Census. While the 2001 Census had already set the alarm bells ringing among the Assamese that the percentage of
Assamese speakers in the state had declined from 57.81% (recorded in the 1991 Census) to 48.80%, the 2011 data has put that number further down at 48.38%.
THE LATEST ISSUE
Every character that we type on a keyboard has a unique code number. These numbers are encoded under a standard maintained by the Unicode Consortium
The letter ‘A’ has the code number U+0041 and is listed as “Latin capital letter A” in the “Basic Latin” code chart.
WHAT IS UNICODE?
• Fundamentally, computers just deal with numbers. They store letters and other characters by assigning a number for each one. Before Unicode was invented, there were hundreds of different systems, called character encoding, for assigning these numbers.
• These early character encoding were limited and could not contain enough characters to cover all the world’s languages. Even for a single language like English no single encoding was adequate for all the letters, punctuation, and technical symbols in common use.
UNICODE CHARACTERS
• The Unicode Standard provides a unique number for every character, no matter what platform, device, application or language.
• It has been adopted by all modern software providers and now allows data to be transported through many different platforms,
devices and applications without corruption. Support of Unicode forms the foundation for the representation of languages and symbols in all major operating systems, search engines, browsers, laptops, and smart phones—plus the Internet and World Wide Web (URLs, HTML, XML, CSS, JSON, etc.)
PROBLEM
On the other hand, the first vowel of the Assamese alphabet is U+0985. The issue is, Unicode defines that symbol as “Bengali letter A”.
Indeed, the Bengali script uses the same symbol for its first vowel. The two scripts share a large number of characters, some pronounced the same way, others denoting different
sounds. In Unicode’s charts, these shared forms are defined as Bengali characters. Only a few characters exclusive to Assamese are listed as “additions for Assamese” — in the chart for Bengali.
ORIGIN OF PROBLEM
• Unicode characters are defined by the international standard ISO 10646; ISO does the encoding on the basis of submissions from the concerned governments.
• Indian government had committed a mistake in 1991, by dropping Assamese while translating its standard ISCII (Indian Standard Code for Information Interchange) for transfer to the
Unicode standard.
