  • A poster for a documentary directed by filmmaker Leena Manimekalai has drawn flak on social media for hurting religious sentiments with the depiction of Goddess Kaali.
  • The filmmaker had earlier taken to Twitter to share a poster of her film which depicted a woman dressed in a costume portraying the goddess and smoking.
  •  A flag of the LGBT community is seen in the background. The film was part of the “Rhythms of Cananda” segment at the Aga Khan Museum in Toronto, according to a tweet by the filmmaker.
  • With Twitterati demanding action against its maker Leena Manimekalai, the hashtag #ArrestLeenaManimekalai began trending

  •  A special cell unit of Delhi Police has registered an FIR against the makers.
  • Additionally, the Uttar Pradesh police have also lodged an FIR against Leena
  • The complaint, which was filed with the Cyber Cell of Delhi Police, reportedly read, “This deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings of Hindu Community through highly objectionable video and photo from her twitter account by the accused which is well circulated in social media and all public platforms is an offence under section 295A ,298, 505, 67 I.T Act and 34 IPC and therefore penal action should be taken against the accused.”

 Maliciously insulting the religion or the religious beliefs of any class  Imprisonment for 2 years, or fine, or both
298 IPC  Uttering any word or making any sound in the hearing or making any gesture, or placing any object in the sight of any person, with intention to wound his religious feeling  Imprisonment for 1 year, or fine, or both

 

505 Statements conducing to public mischief

  • (2) Statements creating or promoting enmity, hatred or ill-will between classes.- imprisonment which may extend to three years, or with fine, or with both.
  • (3) Offence under sub-section (2) committed in place of worship, etc- shall be punished with imprisonment which may extend to five years and shall also be liable to fine.
