Flight rule
Ministry of Civil Aviation, Government of India release rules of flying for passengers in India. The flying rules establish your rights as a passenger, and entails information regarding cancellation, flight delays, loss of baggage, and injury.
A delayed Flight
- Any flight that is delayed by 4 hours or more, would entitle you to free meals/refreshments.
If your flight is delayed by more than two hours after you have checked in on time, and your flight has a block time (time between departure gate to arrival at the destination gate) of 2.5 to 5 hours, you are entitled to a free meal. - In case your domestic flight delays for more than 6 hours, your airline is bound to give you an alternate flight within 6 hours; or, on the other hand, give you a 100 percent refund.
A cancelled Flight
- If a passenger is informed about his or her cancelled flight less than a fortnight but up to 24 hours before departure, he or she is entitled to an alternate flight or full refund.
Refund
- If you are cancelling your ticket less than 7 days between the date of booking and departure, the airline can charge a cancellation fee. This is limited to the base fare, and fuel surcharge. It is important to remember that you can cancel your ticket without any additional charge within 24 hours of booking it.
In case of loss of baggage or damage
If you have lost your baggage onboard or it has been damaged, this is for you. You can claim up to INR 19000 for baggage, and INR 350/kg for cargo. But, you will need to remember that this applies to your check-in baggage, under the care of the airline. If your baggage is unchecked, the airline is only responsible if the damage happened due to its fault.
In case of injury Death
- If there is a case of bodily injury or death on board, the airline will be liable to pay upto SDR (Special Drawing Rights) INR 113100 per passenger in case of international travel. However, this does not include death due to natural causes.
- In case of domestic flights, you will be paid up to INR 20 lakh per passenger in compensation for death. Again, this does not include death due to natural causes.
