  • Sachin Pilgaonkar (born 17 August 1957) often known by his first name Sachin, is an Indian film and television actor, director and producer. Starting as a child actor, in Marathi film, Ha Majha Marg Ekla (1962), he went on to act in around 65 films as a child artiste, before switching to adult roles, and giving hits like Geet Gaata Chal (1975), Balika Badhu (1976), Ankhiyon Ke Jharokhon Se (1978) and many more.
  • Supriya Pilgaonkar (born 17 August 1967) often known by her screen name Supriya, is a Marathi actress. She is the wife of Marathi actor Sachin Pilgaonkar. Her claim to fame is her role of a harried daughter-in-law to Reema Lagoo in the popular Indian TV comedy series Tu Tu Main Main. Supriya was born as Supriya Sabnis on 16 August 1967, in Mumbai, India.
  • Dr. Yaga Venugopal Reddy, better known as Y. V. Reddy, (born 17 August 1941) is an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of the 1964 batch who served as Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) (India’s central bank) from 6 September 2003 until 5 September 2008. In 2010, he was awarded India’s second highest civilian honour, the Padma Vibhushan.
  • Sharat Saxena is an Indian actor working in Bollywood films. He has acted in nearly 160 Bollywood films. Saxena started his career in the early 70s and has mainly played either supporting roles of a father, uncle or villainous roles. He has starred in some of the most successful films of Bollywood like Mr. India, Tridev, Ghayal, Khiladi, Gupt: The Hidden Truth, Soldier, Baghban, Fanaa, Krrish.

    • General Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq (August 12, 1924 – August 17, 1988), was the fourth Chief martial law administrator and the sixth President of Pakistan from September 1978 to his death in August 1988. Distinguished by his role in the Black September in Jordan military operation in 1970, he was appointed Chief of Army Staff in 1976 by Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto.
    • General Akhtar Abdur Rahman Khan (b. 11 June 1924 – 17 August 1988), born in Rampur, was a 4-star general in the Pakistan Army. He served as Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee from 1987–1988 and as Director-General Inter-Services Intelligence from 1980-1987. As DG ISI General Akhtar masterminded the Afghan Jihad against the Soviet Union .
    • Dulal Datta was a film editor in the Bengali film industry located in Kolkata (previously Calcutta), West Bengal, India. He is especially remembered for his association with the acclaimed film director Satyajit Ray.
    • Pulin Behari Das (24 January 1877 – 17 August 1949) was an Indian revolutionary and the founder-president of the Dhaka Anushilan Samiti. Pulin came from a middle class Bengali Hindu family. Though they held landed property they were mostly service holders. His father was an advocate at the sub-divisional court in Madaripur.

      Notable Events:

  • 1761 – William Carey, the first English missionary to India, was born. He taught at the newly founded Fort William College at Calcutta from 1801 till his death and helped found the Serampore Press, which made the Bible accessible to over 300 million people.
  • 1780 – Indian Governor General Warren Hastings duel with Francis to settle personal and official quarrels. Francis was wounded but survived.
  • 1848 – Romesh Chunder Dutt, great political leader, writer and social worker, was born.
