  • Dhyan Chand (29 August 1905 – 3 December 1979) was an Indian field hockey player who was considered to be one of the greatest players of all time. Chand is most remembered for his goal-scoring feats and for his three Olympic gold medals (1928, 1932, and 1936) in field hockey, while India was dominant in the sport. He is best known as “the Wizard” for his superb ball control,
  • Nagarjuna (Akkineni Nagarjuna Rao) is an Indian film actor and producer who works primarily in the Telugu film industry (Tollywood). Nagarjuna made his debut into films with 1986 film Vikram. Since then he acted in over 80 films as a leading actor. He has also worked in a few Bollywood and Tamil films. He has won two National Film Awards, six Nandi Awards and three Filmfare Awards South.

  • Vishal Krishna (born 29 August 1977) is an Indian film actor who has appeared in primarily Tamil cinema. Often starring in his home productions, Vishal became an actor after a stint as an assistant director in films. Though born in a Telugu family, Vishal achieved fame only through Tamil films. He played his first role in the romantic thriller Chellamae.
  • Richa Sharma (born 29 August 1972) is an Indian film playback singer as well a devotional singer. In 2006, she sang Bollywood’s longest track, the bidaai song, in film Baabul (2006). Richa Sharma was born in 5L-90, NH 5 in Faridabad, Haryana, the youngest of seven children of a temple priest. Her father Pandit Daya Shankar Upadhyaya and mother Manorma Devi taught young Richa the art of singing.

  • Jayshree Gadkar (21 February 1942 – 29 August 2008) was a noted Marathi movie actress and a star of Marathi cinema in from the 1950s up to the 1980s. Jayashree was born in a Konkani-speaking family at Kanasgiri (Sadashivgad) near Karwar in the Uttara Kannada district of Karnataka, India. She got married to Bal Dhuri, a theatre actor best known for his portrayal of Dasharatha in Ramanand Sagars .
  • Banarsi Das Gupta (5 November 1917 – 29 August 2007) was a chief minister of Haryana state in India. Born in Bhiwani he studied at Pilani in Rajasthan. He was renowned freedom Fighter and went to jail many times during the British rule. He established Parja Mandal in erstwhile Jind State in pre-independence period and launched agitation for establishment of a responsible Government in Jind State .
  • Nirmal Kumar Mukarji (9 January 1921 – 29 August 2002) was an Indian administrator and the last member of the Indian Civil Service to serve. In the course of a long career he was Home Secretary, Cabinet Secretary, and eventually Governor of Punjab. He died in 2002. Born in Delhi to Satyanand Mukarji, Principal of St. Stephen’s College, Delhi, Mukarji was educated at St. Stephen’s.
  • Swami Parijnanashram III (June 15, 1947-August 29, 1991) was the tenth guru of the Chitrapur Saraswat Brahmin community. He succeeded his teacher Swami Ānandāshram in 1966 after the latter died. Swami Parijñānāshram III was one who had a keen thirst for knowledge-be it Vedic or technical.

Notable Events:

  • 1905 – Major Dhyanchand was born in a Rajput family at Prayag at Uttar Pradesh. He is remembered as a Master of Hockey. India celebrates this day as National Sports Day.
  • 1612 – Battle at Surat in India; English fleet beats Portuguese.
  • 1880 – Madhav Shrihari Ane, greatest Freedom fighter, was born.
