BASICS
The Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) is an intergovernmental process established in 1996 to foster dialogue and cooperation between Asia and Europe. Presently it comprises 53 partners: 30 European and 21 Asian countries, the European Union and the ASEAN Secretariat( Jakarta ).

SOME POINTS FOR EXAM
- In November 1994, Singapore and France proposed that an EU-Asia summit meeting be held, to consider how to build a new partnership between the two regions.
- Following Singapore’s proposal, the 1st ASEM Summit (ASEM1) was held in March 1996 in Bangkok, Thailand, which marks the beginning of the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM).
- Summit are held every 2 years

THE 12TH ASEM SUMMIT (ASEM12)
- The summit was chaired by the European Council President Donald TUSK. European Commission President Jean-Claude JUNCKER and High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica MOGHERINI, also represented the EU at the summit.
- Discussions focused on the theme “Europe and Asia: Global Partners for Global Challenges”.
12TH ASEM SUMMIT HELD IN BRUSSELS, BELGIUM
- India was represented by Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu.
- This edition of summit has prioritised issues related to trade and investment, connectivity, sustainable development, climate change, terrorism, migration, maritime security and cyberspace.
WHAT INDIA SAID AT THE SUMMIT
Vice President Venkaiah Naidu Terming terrorism as a major threat to peace and stability, he called for an early conclusion of the Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism while stressing that peace is the prerequisite for progress and it cannot be achieved without combatting terrorism.
WORLD LEADERS BACKED FREE TRADE
- European and Asian leaders pledged their support for free trade at a meeting Friday that underscored global trade tensions with US President Donald Trump.
- German Chancellor Angela Merkel said the Asia-Europe Meeting in Brussels would send a signal that “countries are coming together here from Europe and Asia that all want rules-based global trade and are committed to multilateralism.”

ASIA–EUROPE FOUNDATION
- The Asia–Europe Foundation (ASEF) is an intergovernmental not-for-profit organization located in Singapore. Founded in 1997, it is the only institution of the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM).
- Its purpose is to promote mutual understanding and cooperation between the people of Asia and Europe through intellectual, cultural, and people-to-people exchanges.
