THE PROCESS
Passed ThroughTheresa May’s Cabinet Approved by the EU Summit Needs to be passed through the U.K’s house of commons (Video being recording on 27th of November 2018)
HOUSE OF COMMONS OF THE UNITED KINGDOM
The House of Commons is the lower house of the Parliament of the United Kingdom.
THE BREXIT DEAL
The BREXIT Deal is basically a 585-page withdrawal agreement
The three main issues dominate the deal
- Financial Settlement between the U.K and the E.U
- Rights of U.K and E.U citizens living in eachother’s countries
- U.K – Republic of Ireland Ireland Border Issue
UNDERSTANDING THE U.K
The United Kingdom includes the island of Great Britain, the north-eastern part of the island of Ireland and many smaller islands. The term “Great Britain” is often used to include the whole of England, Scotland and Wales including their component adjoining islands
THE MAP
REPUBLIC OF IRELAND
It joined the European Economic Community (EEC), the predecessor of the European Union, in 1973. Capital is Dublin Currency – Euro (Capital of Northern Ireland is Belfast)
NORTHERN IRELAND
From the 1970s to the 1990s, there was a lot of fighting between armed groups on both sides and many people died in the violence. In order to deal with the conflict, British troops were sent to the area, but they came into conflict with Republican armed groups, the largest of which was the Irish Republican Army (IRA). The IRA carried out deadly bombings in Britain and Northern Ireland. Armed Loyalists also carried out violence.
GOOD FRIDAY AGREEMENT
On 10 April 1998, something called the Good Friday Agreement (or Belfast Agreement) was signed. This agreement helped to bring to an end a period of conflict in the region called the Troubles. The Troubles was a period when there was a lot of violence between two groups – Republicans and Loyalists. Many people were killed in the fighting.
GOOD FRIDAY AGREEMENT
Good Friday Agreement Also opened borders between Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland
BREXIT BRINGS THE PROBLEM
Hard border can Return as Republic of Ireland will stay in European Union But Northern Ireland being a part of Britain will be part of the Brexit
TRADE CAN HURT U.K
The Republic’s trade with the UK is worth about €65 billion a year and sustains over 400,000 jobs on both islands. Irish farmers and dairies sell 100,000 tonnes of cheese to the UK every year while more than half of the Republic’s €2.5 billion beef exports go to the UK.
TO SOLVE THIS PROBLEM U.K AND E.U NEED A TRADE DEAL
- The transition period (which the UK government calls “implementation period”) begins on 29 March 2019 and lasts until 31 December 2020.
- The UK will need to abide by all EU rules, but will lose membership of its institutions.
- The draft withdrawal agreement says the transition can be extended, but only for a period of one or two years (in other words up to the end of 2022 at most). The Trade Deal Must be signed before the end of the Transition period
FINANCIAL SETTLEMENT BETWEEN THE U.K AND THE E.U
U.K has agreed to pay 39 billion pounds to e.u
RIGHTS OF U.K AND E.U CITIZENS LIVING IN EACH OTHER’S COUNTRIES
E.U Citizens can live in U.K Those who have been living in U.K for more than 5 years can apply for citizenship UK citizens in the EU, and EU citizens in the UK, will retain their residency and social security rights after Brexit.
