SIGNIFICANCE OF G20

Together, the G20 members represent –
1. Two thirds of the world population.
2. 85% of the global gross product.
3. 75% of international trade.
4. 80% of global investments in research and development. Because the G-20 is a forum, its agreements or decisions have no legal impact, but they do influence countries’ policies and
global cooperation

WHY WAS THE G20 CREATED?

The G20 was conceived in 1999, while the repercussions of the Asian financial crisis of 1997
still lasted.
The committee’s inaugural meeting took place in Berlin in December 1999.

WHICH ISSUES DOES THE G20 ADDRESS?

• The G20 focuses on a broad agenda of issues of global importance. Although issues pertaining to the global economy dominate the agenda, additional items have become more important in recent years.
• Traditional topics of debate centre around the global economy, financial markets, tax and fiscal policy, trade, agriculture, employment, energy and the fight against corruption. Other elements of recent agendas include the advancement of women in the job market, the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, climate change, global health, anti-terrorism and inclusive entrepreneurship, among others.

BESIDES THE G20 MEMBERS, WHO ELSE ATTENDS THE G20 MEETINGS?

Spain is a permanent invited country and has attended every G20 summit since 2008. Every year, the host country invites a number of additional countries at its discretion.
For the 2018 G20, President Mauricio Macri has invited Chile and the Netherlands.

WHAT IS THE G20 PRESIDENCY?

• One country is chosen by the G20 members to hold the presidency over the group for one year.
• The presiding country organizes and hosts the meetings, sets the agenda priorities to discuss and invites additional attendees at its discretion.

• As the G20 has no permanent secretariat, the role of the presiding country is critical to the forum’s effectiveness.

HOW IS THE G20 PRESIDENCY CHOSEN?

The annual G20 presidency rotates between its member countries. The nineteen countries are divided into five groups, each containing no more than four countries. The country groups are predominantly organized on a regional basis. The presidency rotates between each group. Every year, the G20 selects a country from another group to be president.

It will be the 13th meeting of Group of Twenty (G20) and the first G20 summit to be hosted
in South America. This year, the theme of the summit is ‘Building Consensus for Fair and
Sustainable Development’

India presented a nine-point agenda to G20 member nations calling for strong and active
cooperation among them to comprehensively deal with fugitive economic offenders.
India also called for joint efforts by G-20 countries to form a mechanism that denies entry and safe havens to fugitive economic offenders.
