WHAT JUST HAPPENED?

• Union Minister of Railways Piyush Goyal during Question Hour informed Rajya Sabha members that Indian Railways is conducting TRI-NETRA (Terrain Imaging for Drivers Infrared, Enhanced, Optical & Radar Assisted) technology for detecting obstructions on tracks.

WHAT RAILWAY MINISTER SAID

•  “This is also under extensive trials. This Tri-netra device is making an attempt during fog through ultrasonic waves where it will be able to detect any obstruction on tracks. It is under testing, but without proper testing it cannot be implemented, as it does not give us the confidence to implement it,” the minister said.

 MEASUERS FOR PUNCTUALITY OF TRAINS

• Broadly, trains lose punctuality on Indian Railways due to factors related to its internal working as well as external factors of which Railways are not in control of.
•  Other than asset failures, various constraints /difficulties which adversely affect punctuality are numerous such as – line capacity constraints on account of increasing passenger and freight traffic, adverse weather conditions (fog, rains, breaches); intermittent natural calamities such as floods, cyclones, heavy rains; heavy road traffic at level crossing gates across the Indian Railways network; multi faceted law and order problems, including public agitations and bandh calls in left wing extremism affected areas, miscreant activities such as theft of Railway assets; mid-section run over cases involving cattle and humans, etc.

HOW IT WILL WORK The TRI-NETRA

•  (Terrain Imaging for Drivers Infrared, Enhanced, Optical & Radar Assisted) system comprises Infrared Camera, Optical Camera and Radar assisted imaging system to assist Loco pilots to identify obstructions on tracks, especially in foggy conditions.
•  This Tri-netra device is making an attempt during fog through ultrasonic waves where it will be able to detect any obstruction on tracks.

• First in 2002-03 India Railways has developed a modern technology and tried it extensively but it was found to be not successful. So the project was aborted and subsequently another technology of Fog-past devices for seeing in fog was developed. Thus, TRI-NETRA system is another attempt by Indian Railways to develop modern technology.
