SAGAR MAITRI MISSION-2
- INS Sagardhwani, an oceanographic research vessel of the Defence Research and Development Organisation, embarked on a two-month-long Sagar Maitri Mission-2 from Southern Naval Command in Kochi on Thursday, officials said.
- INS Sagardhwani (A74) is a marine acoustic research ship (MARS) owned by the Naval Physical and Oceanographic Laboratory (NPOL), a DRDO laboratory
- The indigenously built INS Sagardhwani was commissioned on July 30, 1994. The ship is fitted with state-of-the-art equipment, including the latest wave height measuring radar, and is exclusively used for the scientific and research programmes of NPOL.
NAVAL COMMANDS
- The Indian Navy currently operates three commands — Western Naval Command located at Mumbai, Southern Naval Command located at Kochi and Eastern Naval Command located at Visakhapatnam.
- The Andaman and Nicobar Command, a unified Indian Navy, Indian Army, Indian Air Force and Coast Guard Command was set up in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands in 2001.
- INS SAGARDHWANI NOTES SAGAR MAITRI is a unique initiative of DRDO with the broad objective of “Safety And Growth for All in the Region (SAGAR)” to promote closer co-operation in socioeconomic aspects as well as greater scientific interaction especially in ocean research among Indian Ocean Rim (IOR) countries.

INDIAN-OCEAN RIM ASSOCIATION
- The Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA), formerly known as the Indian Ocean Rim Initiative and Indian Ocean Rim Association for Regional Cooperation (IOR-ARC), is an international organisation consisting of coastal states bordering the Indian Ocean. The Coordinating Secretariat of IORA is located at Ebene, Mauritius.

- The IOR countries for this mission, include Oman, Maldives, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and Myanmar. INS Sagardhwani The mission commemorates the Golden Jubilee Celebrations of India’s lone research ship INS Kistna’s missions as part of the historic International Indian Ocean Expeditions (IIOE), which took place during 1962-65. INS Sagardhwani will revisit the selected tracks of INS Kistna.
