BASICS
- Full Name: The MOSAiC mission stands for Multidisciplinary drifting Observatory for the Study of Arctic Climate.
- Mission objective: Studying the impact of climate change on the Arctic and how it could affect the rest of the world.
MOSAIC MISSION I
- It is a one-year-long expedition into the Central Arctic, planned to take place from 2019 to 2020.
- For the first time a modern research icebreaker will operate in the direct vicinity of the North Pole year round, including the nearly half year long polar night during winter.
ARCTIC COUNCIL
- Scientists plan to sail the ship into the Arctic Ocean, anchor it to a large piece of sea ice and allow the water to freeze around them, effectively trapping themselves in the vast sheet of white that forms over the North Pole each winter.
- The organizers say that the project is unprecedented in scale and ambition.
DETAILS
- Project cost – $158 million
- The mission has received funding from U.S. institutions such as the National Science Foundation, the Department of Energy, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and NASA.
HIMADRI STATION
- Himadri Station is India’s first Arctic research station located at Spitsbergen, Svalbard, Norway.
- It is located at the International Arctic Research base, Ny-Ålesund. It was inaugurated on the 1st of July, 2008 by the Minister of Earth Sciences.
INDARC
- IndARC is India’s first underwater moored observatory in the Arctic region. It was deployed in 2014 at Kongsfjorden fjord, Svalbard, Norway which is midway between Norway and North Pole.
- Its research goal is to study the Arctic climate and its influence on the monsoon.
