What are Baltic nations?
WHICH COUNTRIES ARE KNOWN AS THE BALTIC NATIONS? WHY ARE THEY CALLED THESE?
- The Baltic States are: Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia.
- These countries are all part of the EU, NATO, NordicBaltic Eight (NB8) and many other organizations.
- All 3 countries are very progressive, fast-growing economies, seeking to be on-par with the neighboring countries across the Baltic Sea.
NORDIC-BALTIC EIGHT
- Nordic-Baltic Eight (NB8) is a regional co-operation format that includes Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, and Sweden.
- Under NB8, regular meetings are held of the Baltic and Nordic countries’ Prime Ministers, Speakers of Parliaments, Foreign Ministers, branch ministers, Secretaries of State and political directors of Foreign Ministries, as well as expert consultations where regional issues and current international topics are reviewed.

- Lithuania can be important technology partner for India: Venkaiah Naidu
- Lithuania has developed expertise in laser technology, and exports its products to several countries.
- Lasers and related technology have emerged as an important component of Lithuania’s trade with India, and are especially sought after by Indian universities and research centres, and could also be used for India’s industrial needs.
INDIA AND LATVIA
- India and Latvia have been historically linked by the ancient route called “The Amber Way” – an ancient trade route to transport amber from coastal areas of the North Sea and the Baltic Sea to the Mediterranean Sea.
- Thanks to its ice-free ports and well-developed rail and road network, Latvia connects the Baltic region with the rest of Europe as well as Russia and Central Asia. This would help Indian exports reach these markets.
ESTONIA
- Estonia is a pioneer in e-governance and home to the NATO Cooperative Cyber Defence Centre of Excellence, which India could benefit from.
- India can benefit from Estonian best practices for building its digital architecture and cyber security capacity.
