BACKGROUND
- On 24 June 2016, a vote in a referendum to leave the European Union took place.
- People choose for BREXIT.
- David Cameron was against it from the beginning & hence resigned on July 13.
- During that time Boris Johnson was very much in favour of BREXIT.
- But Theresa May was appointed the PM (13 July 2016) even though she didn’t favour the BREXIT.
- But since people choose to BREXIT, the responsibility to take UK out of EU was on May.
DEAL OR NO DEAL
- Theresa May negotiated with EU & decided for BREXIT by 31st October, 2019.
- Thus the BREXIT was to take place with a ‘DEAL’.
- But her DEAL was rejected thrice by Parliament– EU Withdrawal Agreement Bill.
- Hence she decided to resign on 24th July 2019.
BORIS JOHNSON
- Appointed PM of UK on 24th July 2019.
- A very populist leader who strongly supported the exit of UK from EU.
- After being appointed as PM, he re-affirmed for BREXIT by 31st October 2019.
- But there were lot of issues remained about the ‘DEAL’.
ALTERNATIVE
- To this problem, Boris Johnson provided an alternative.
- He asked for the BREXIT which will be applied to all parts of UK except the Irish area.
- But many MPs again rejected this idea of One Nation – Two System. (China – Hong Kong)
2 MAIN RESOLUTIONS
BREXIT WITHOUT DEAL
- At last, Johnson decided to go for BREXIT ‘WITHOUT’ Deal.
- Hence, he moved a resolution in House of Commons for BREXIT Without a DEAL.
- But this was opposed and even 21 MPs from Conservative Party voted against.
FRESH ELECTION
- Boris Johnson went for another resolution of Fresh Election in the hope that everyone would be ready for this.
- But this resolution was to be passed by 2/3rd majority because in 2011 UK passed a law fixing the term was for 5 years.
- But even this resolution failed to go through.
- Now Boris Johnson prorogued the House till the new session starts on 14th October, 2019.
- This prorogation has probably taken place for the 1st time.
- Later the UK parliament even approved a law seeking to Block No-deal BREXIT.
WHAT NEXT?- 3 SCENARIOS
- First, Johnson could obey the law passed in Parliament last week and request for an extension to Brexit from EU.
- Second, if EU decline Johnson’s extension request, he could revive former Prime Minister Theresa May’s thrice defeated Brexit deal.
- Third, if he breaks the law and go for BREXIT without a DEAL, then he could face impeachment or even prison.
