ABOUT THE REPORT
- The International Migrant Stock 2019, a dataset released by the Population Division of the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA).
- It provides the latest estimates of the number of international migrants by age, sex and origin for all countries and areas of the world.
- UN defines international migrants as anyone who changes their country of usual residence, irrespective of their motive – be it for work or as a refugee.
- UN’s data set is based largely on collated census figures.
FINDINGS OF THE REPORT
- The number of migrants globally reached an estimated 272 million.
- India was the leading country of origin of international migrants in 2019 with a 17.5 million strong diaspora.
- India constituted 6.4% of the total world migrant population.
ORIGIN COUNTRIES
- There has been 12% rise in total migrant population, which was 243 million in 2015.
- The top 10 countries of origin account for one-third of all international migrants.
- Mexico (11.8 million), China (10.7 million), Russia (10.5 million), Syria (8.2 million), Bangladesh (7.8 million), Pakistan (6.3 million), Ukraine (5.9 million), the Philippines (5.4 million) and Afghanistan (5.1 million).
HOST COUNTRY
- At regional level, Europe hosted the largest number of international migrants (82 million), followed by Northern America (59 million).
- At the country level, about half of all international migrants reside in just 10 countries.
- USA hosting the largest number of international migrants (51 million), equal to about 19% of the world’s total.
INDIA AS A HOST COUNTRY
- India hosted 5.1 million international migrants in 2019, less than the 5.2 million in 2015.
- The highest number of international migrants came from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Nepal.
- Among the international migrants in India, the female population was 48.8% and the median age of international migrants was 47.1 years.
REFUGEES IN INDIA
- The country hosted 207,000 refugees.
- Refugees as a share of international migrants in India was 4%.
INDIA’S TOP DESTINATION COUNTRY
- UAE, US and Saudi Arabia – with 3.4 million, 2.6 million and 2.4 million respectively – were the top 3 destinations for Indians.
- While the Gulf countries continue to have a high concentration of Indians, they’ve lost some of their drawing power, going by foreign ministry figures.
- John Wilmoth, director, UN’s Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) saying: “The link between migration and development is very well established.”
- “The contribution of migrants both in host countries and countries of origin, includes sending valuable remittances back to countries of origin, And a major social contribution through transmission of ideas,” he said.
