AFGHANISTAN’S CONCERNS
- Fearing misrepresentation of former Afghan emperor Ahmad Shah Abdali in Ashutosh Gowarikar’s upcoming Bollywood period drama Panipat, the Embassy of Afghanistan has expressed concerns to New Delhi and sought a meeting with Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar over the issue.
PANIPAT MOVIE
- Based on the Third Battle of Panipat
- 14 January 1761
- Why were so many empire-shaking battles fought at Panipat?
- Panipat fell on the Grand Trunk Road built by Shershah Suri, which made it easy for conquerors to find their way there. Additionally, Panipat was an area with a terrain that consisted mostly of large plains, making it suitable for war. Also, its proximity to the capital of Delhi made it easy for the Indian rulers to transport weapons, military and food supplies etc to the battleground, and still keep the capital insulated from the conflict at hand.
THIRD BATTLE OF PANIPAT
EFFECTS OF THE BATTLE
- Immediately after the battle, the Afghan army massacred thousands of Maratha soldiers as well as civilians in the streets of Panipat. The vanquished women and children were taken as slaves to Afghan camps.
- Even a day after the battle, around 40,000 Maratha prisoners were slaughtered in cold blood.
- Sadashivrao Bhau and the Peshwa’s son Vishwasrao were among those killed in battle.
- The Peshwa Balaji Bajirao never recovered from the shock this debacle gave.
- There were heavy casualties on both sides.
- The Maratha rise was checked but they retook Delhi ten years later under Peshwa Madhavrao.
- Durrani did not remain in India too long. He reinstated Mughal Shah Alam II as the Emperor at Delhi.
AHMAD SHAH ABDALI
- Ahmad Shah Durrani raided India eight times between 1748 and 1767.
- The reasons for his invasions to India were:
- The primary object of his invasion was to plunder India’s wealth
- Like Muhammad of Ghor, the object of his invasions was to establish political hegemony in India as he was quite familiar with the weak Mughal administration of Delhi
AHMAD SHAH DURRANI
- The founder of the Durrani Empire and is regarded as the founder of the modern state of Afghanistan.

THE ISSUE
- Within hours of the trailer release, the Afghanistan Embassy in New Delhi wrote to the Ministry of External Affairs.
- “Since the film is related to former Afghan emperor Ahmad Shah Abdali, any insensitive/distorted depiction of his character might provoke emotions of Afghans which could be unfairly exploited by others to adversely affect the trust and harmony that exists so well among the people of two countries,” the letter stated.
