EARLY LIFE

• Maliwal was born in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh on 15 October 1984, in a Maheswari family. She went to Amity International School and then received a bachelor’s degree in Information Technology at the JSS Academy of Technical Education.
• The daughter of an army officer, Swati chose to involve herself in social work, over a corporate job offer from HCL. She is married to Pandit Naveen Jaihind of Aam Aadmi Party.

DCW

• Maliwal started her first term as Chairperson of Delhi Commission for Women in July 2015. At the time, she was the Aam Aadmi Party leader.
• Her tenure in the position was extended another three years in July 2018.She is the youngest person to hold the role of commissioner for women.

RAPE ROKO

• In 2018, she went on a 10-day hunger strike which started on April 13. She had several demands, including the passage of an ordinance requiring the death penalty for individuals who rape children under age 12, recruiting police under United Nations standards and demanding accountability of the police.
• Maliwal, singlehandedly started the #RapeRoko campaign in January 2018, after reports of an 8- month-old baby being raped surfaced.

• Ever since her appointment as the Chief, DCW, she has taken on 12,000 cases for the welfare of women.
• During her initial term, Maliwal cracked down on the brothels of GB Road to tackle women and child trafficking. It was said to be one of the greatest challenges of her term

• Maliwal is currently on a hunger strike protesting against rape incidents in the country.
