EARLY LIFE

  • Gita was born on 8 December 1971 in Kolkata, India. She is the younger of two daughters of T.V. Gopinath and V.C. Vijayalakshmi, both of whom hail from Kannur, Kerala.
  • Gita did her schooling at Nirmala Convent School in Mysore. She received a B.A. degree from Lady Shri Ram College for Women of the University of Delhi in 1992 and an M.A. degree in economics from Delhi School of Economics, also of the University of Delhi, in 1994.

GENIUS

  • She further completed an M.A. degree at the University of Washington in 1996. In 2001, she obtained her Ph.D. degree at Princeton University.She was awarded the Princeton’s Woodrow Wilson Fellowship Research Award while doing her doctoral research at Princeton.
  • Ms. Gopinath’s research, which focuses on International Finance and Macroeconomics, has been published in many top economics journals. She has authored numerous research articles on exchange rates, trade and investment, international financial crises, monetary policy, debt, and emerging market crises.

 CAREER

  • She is the co-editor of the current Handbook of International Economics and was earlier the co-editor of the American Economic Review and managing editor of the Review of Economic Studies.
  • From 2016-18, she was the Economic Adviser to the Chief Minister of Kerala state in India. She also served as a member of the Eminent Persons Advisory Group on G-20 Matters for India’s Ministry of Finance.
  • In 2019, Foreign Policy named her one of the Top Global Thinkers, in 2014, she was named one of the top 25 economists under 45 by the IMF and in 2011 she was chosen a Young Global Leader (YGL) by the World Economic Forum.

CAREER

  • The Indian government awarded her the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman, the highest honour conferred on overseas Indians. She is a U.S. citizen and an Overseas Citizen of India.
  • Gita Gopinath is the John Zwaanstra Professor of International Studies and of Economics at Harvard University.
  • She is married to Iqbal Dhaliwal, who is the executive director at Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab at Department of Economics, Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

CAREER

  • Gita Gopinath has been appointed as the chief economist at the International Monetary Fund (IMF). She will be assuming the post of economic counsellor and director of the IMF’s Research Department.
  • Gopinath will be succeeding Maurice Obstfeld, who had announced earlier this year that he will be retiring at the end of 2018.
  • She is the second Indian after former RBI governor Raghuram Rajan to hold the position.
