WHAT ARE E-VISAS, VISAS AND VISA-FREE TRAVEL?
WHAT IS VISA? WHY IS IT REQUIRED TO TRAVEL?
- The main difference between a passport and a visa is that a passport is issued to a country’s citizens for international travel and identification. Visa is an endorsement placed within a passport that grants the holder official permission to enter, leave or stay in a country for a specified time period.
BASICS
- The most common visa types are tourist, student, work and transit visas. Depending on where you are traveling, a visa can be valid for single or multiple visits. Some visas require an application to be filed prior to entering the country and other visas are granted upon entering the country. Certain countries require an interview or medical screening prior to applying for a visa.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN AN E – VISA AND A VISA ON ARRIVAL?
- Visa on arrival is that which is applied after arrival at other country’s airport. Dedicated counters are located there where you have to be present with required documents and fees and apply visa on arrival.
E – VISA
- The e-visa system is an innovation introduced by the Narendra Modi government in 2014. The facility was expanded in 2017- 2018.
- India extends the facility of e-visa to the citizens of 165 countries around the world. The eligibility criteria for obtaining the e-visa require the applicant to have at least six-month passport validity at the time of applying.
- However, the facility is not available for the citizens of Pakistan and they are expected to apply for regular visas from the Indian High Commission in Islamabad.
E-VISA
- Foreign nationals can avail of the e-visa for general recreational trip to India or to attend educational courses on music, dance, traditional medicine and yoga not exceeding six months.
NOTES
The e-visa is a regular visa issued electronically. The e-visa is easy to control unlike the normal visa issued by the diplomatic missions of India. In some cases, a visa might require to be canceled because of discrepancy in
