WHAT IS A GEOGRAPHICAL INDICATION?

A GI is a sign used on products that have a specific geographical origin and Possess qualities or a reputation that are due to that origin.
In order to function as a GI, a sign must identify a product as originating in a given place.

Like Copyright, Patent, Trademark etc.
Geographical Indication Tag provides similar rights and protection to holders.
GI tags is a requirement of TRIPS agreement India, as a member of the WTO,
Enacted the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration & Protection)Act, 1999
Came into force on 15th September 2003.
It is responsible for registering GIs in India.

Manipur black rice is popularly known as ‘Chakhao’ by the locals.
It took more than a year for the registration process.
Chak-hao is well known for its attractive colour and aromatic flavour.
Considered as one of the richest source of anthocyanin.
It act as antioxidants and fighting free radicals,anti-inflammatory, anti-viral, and anti-cancer benefits.
It has optimal content of vitamins, minerals, fibre, proteins etc.
According to findings, black rice consumption contributes to the prevention and management of ailments such as-
Atherosclerosis, diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, hypertension, high cholesterol levels, arthritis, allergies, aging signs and even cancer.
The uniqueness of the black aromatic rice of Manipur is, its pleasant aroma coupled with stickiness which is not common in other black rice grown in other parts of the world.
It is considered to be rice variety with a higher vitamin and mineral content than both white and brown rice.
Chakhao has also been used by traditional medical practitioners as part of traditional medicine.
It is sold at Rs 100-120 a kilogram on an average in the Imphal market.

The project coordinator MS Khaidemof Manipur Small Farmers’ Agri-Business Consortiumsaid,
“Now we can sellseeds as well as grains to any parts of the globe.
We will get loyalty if anyone wants to do trading.”
