India Represented at Taiwan President’s Swearing in
- 2 Members of Parliament from India virtually attended the swearing-in ceremony of Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen
BJP MPs – Meenakshi Lekhi and Rahul Kaswan
- They also sent congratulatory messages to the Taiwanese President.
The Ceremony
- 92 dignitaries from 41 countries had a virtual presence at the ceremony.
- No foreign dignitaries travelled to Taipei due to COVID 19 travel ban in Taiwan.
- India was represented at the ceremony in Taipei by Sohang Sen, the acting director general of the India Taipei Association.
Praise for Taiwan
- A joint message from BJP MPs Meenakshi Lekhi and Rahul Kaswan praised Taiwan as “a democratic country”.
- “Both India and Taiwan are democratic countries, bonded by shared values of freedom, democracy and respect for human rights. Over the past years, India and Taiwan have enhanced bilateral relations enormously in wide-ranging areas, especially trade, investment and people to people exchanges,” the two lawmakers said in their message.
- Several senior S. officials and Senators sent messages of congratulation.
Why is India’s representation Significant?
- The development is India’s subtle message to China
- In 2016, when Tsai was elected to her first term, after initial consideration, the Modi government had decided against sending its MPs to Taiwan for the inaugural ceremony.

‘’One China’’
- The “One-China policy” is a policy asserting that there is only one sovereign state under the name China, as opposed to the idea that there are two states, the People’s Republic of China (PRC) and the Republic of China (ROC), whose official names incorporate “China”.
- 179 of the 194 United Nations members do not have an official diplomatic establishment in Taiwan. India is among them too.
