India Finally Supports Australia Led Resolution On Coronavirus At WHA – Free PDF

WORLD HEALTH ASSEMBLY

• The World Health Assembly is the key decision-making body of the World Health Organization, attended by representatives of the United Nation’s 194 member states.

PURPOSE?

• This year’s assembly, the 73rd WHA, will be dedicated almost entirely to strengthening global coordination against the Covid-19 pandemic, which has infected more than 4.7 million people and killed 315,000.

THE AUSTRALIAN PROPOSAL

POINT TO NOTE

• The five eyes group (which consists U.S, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and U.K) were asking for permission from the Chinese government to send their own teams to investigate the Wuhan lab
• China denied the request
• Now Australia has moved a resolution at WHA to let the WHO team do the investigation on the origin of the virus

POINT TO NOTE

• India U.S and Russia are among the countries that co-sponsored the resolution tabled by Australia
• However more than a 100 nations have pledged support to this resolution which means it has a high chance of getting accepted in the WHA
• Nations in China’s orbit—like Cambodia, Nepal and Pakistan—didn’t co-sponsor it.

TAIWAN ISSUE

• The presence of Taiwan at the meeting is likely to prove a divisive issue, and there is significant risk that valuable time –the meeting is strictly limited to two days –could be lost in the machinations of whether representatives of the Taipei government will be allowed in the meeting.
