Cyclone

  • A tropical cyclone is a rotating low-pressure weather system that usually forms over warm ocean waters – like in the Bay of Bengal.
  • Tropical cyclones derive their energy from the intense thunderstorm activity that forms around the eye of the storm.
  • The official Australian cyclone season ended on April 30 and while some cyclones were known to form in early May, it was rare to see one so late in the month.

Extra –Tropical or Ex- Tropical?

  • Extratropical cyclones are low-pressure systems that form outside of the tropics and in the middle latitudes of Earth between 30° and 60° latitude.
  • Extratropical cyclones, sometimes called mid-latitude cyclones or wave cyclones, are low-pressure areas capable of producing anything from cloudiness and mild showers to heavy gales, thunderstorms, blizzards, and tornadoes.

Post-tropical cyclone

  • A post-tropical cyclone is formed when the typical characteristics of a tropical cyclone are replaced with those of extratropical cyclones.
  • The Australian Bureau of Meteorology calls them ‘ex- tropical cyclone ‘.

Naming of Cyclones in this region

  • The Australian Bureau of Meteorology monitors all tropical cyclones within the region, and assigns names to tropical cyclones that form outside of the areas of responsibility of TCWC Jakarta and TCWC Port Moresby.

  • If a tropical depression reaches tropical cyclone strength within TCWC Jakarta’s area of responsibility, it will be assigned a name from the Jakarta list
  • When a system develops into a tropical cyclone below 10°S between 90°E and 160°E, then it will be named by the Australian Bureau of Meteorology
