NEPAL’S REACTION

  • The Indian Army chief’s remarks about Nepal acting at the behest of others in raising a border dispute has “hurt the sentiments of the Nepali Gurkha army personnel who lay down their lives to protect India”, Nepal’s defence minister Ishwar Pokhrel

NEPAL’S REACTION

  • He added, “How professional is it for the head of the army to make a political statement? We don’t have anything like that here. Nepali Army does not go vocal on such matter. Army is not there to speak. Nepali Army is a fully professional military force. It would definitely play its role in the right time, as per the directives of the government based on our Constitution.”

COMPLETE STATEMENT

  • Pokhrel, who is also the deputy prime minister, described India as “our friendly state” and said the “lost Nepali territory must be returned through peaceful political dialogue and through diplomatic channel, and I am confident that it is possible”.
  • There was no immediate response from the Indian side to Pokhrel’s remarks.

POINT TO NOTE

  • Since the independence of India in 1947, as per the terms of the Britain–India–Nepal Tripartite Agreement, six Gorkha regiments, formerly part of the British Indian Army, became part of the Indian Army and have served ever since.

HERE ARE SOME OF THE BENEFITS THAT THEY RECEIVE,

  • Nepali kids have two choices while making their career in the armed forces, either to join Indian army or Nepalese army. After service, they are resettled as Nepali citizens. The Govt. of India provides unique opportunities to the Nepali citizens to serve as an officer in the Indian armed forces. There are many officers from Nepal who have already rose to the ranks of Majors/Lieutenants. They receive same basic rates of pay although allowances might differ depending upon the differences in cost of living where the soldier might be serving. They are allowed extended period of leave in Nepal every three years. They are liable for service worldwide. They are fully integrated into the Indian army and in no case considered mercenary

NEPAL ARMY SIZE

  • 95,000 active personnel
  •  50,000 reserve personnel

POINT TO NOTE

  • So far in the review Nepal has only asked for better treatment of its veterans in Britain
  • But some sources have claimed that Nepal might in the future scrap this treaty altogether
