Rassul Galwan; The Explorer
- River Galwan is named after a great Ladakhi explorer Ghulam Rassul Galwan.
- According to the book Forsaking Paradise: Stories from Ladakh, he came to Leh in 1885 after 15 months journey of central Asia and Tibet
- Ghulam Rasul Galwan was the guide and pony man of adventure traveller Francis Younghusband

- This book presents picture of life and times of early twentieth century Ladakh and some part of Central Asia.
Servant of Sahibs
- Foreword of ‘Servant of Sahibs’ is written by Francis Younghusband.
- In his foreword, Younghusband writes: “Why Himalayan peoples should be ready as they are to undergo hardships, and run risks of the most serious nature, in the service of stray traveler who appears among them is not easy to understand.
The GALWANS
- In this book, Rassul Galwan mentioned that he was the son of Karra Galwan.
- According to the book, the literal meaning of Karra Galwan is “Black Robber”.
- Karra Galwan used to rob rich people in Kashmir Valley in Robin hood style. As per Rassul Galwan, Karra Galwan was the savior of Galwan Tribe.
- He was sentenced to death by Dogra Kings of Kashmir and his family got settled in Leh, after travelling the life taking journey of Himalayas.
The GALWANS
- According to another story, Galwan tribe was the horse keepers of Dogra kings of Kashmir. They used to work as pony men and guide for the European travellers who visited Central Asia and Tibet.
