DRDO’S CONTRIBUTION IN FIGHT AGAINST COVID-19
- The Defence Research Development Organisation (DRDO) has been working to produce low cost high volume products in it’s fight against Covid-19.
DRDO’S CONTRIBUTION IN FIGHT AGAINST COVID-19
- Doctors and health workers ,who were wearing the PPE kits while treating the Covid patients, have been complaining about dehydration, dizziness and sweating since the outbreak of the diseases
SUMERU PACS
- With the feedback from doctors and health workers, DRDO developed a device called “SUMERU-PACS” that help wearers of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) be comfortable without sweating.
- Sumeru Pac is a personal air circulation system which can be used inside the PPE as a small backpack of approximately 500 grams weight.
SUMERU PACS
- The system is suitable for indoors especially for doctors and other medical staff wearing PPE cover all six hours in the hospitals with ambient temperature up to 39 degree Celsius.
- The device draws the outside air with the help of a filter and the moist air goes out from the front face opening thereby, cooling neck and the head area.
DRDO’S OTHER INVENTIONS
- In it’s bid to fight Covid-19 DRDO has produced more than half a dozen essential items—ranging from high protection face masks to full body protection suits and multi patient ventilators. Among these items UV disinfectant tower and Ultra Swachh demand special mentioning.
UV DISINFECTANT TOWER DRDO
- developed an ultra violet (UV) disinfection tower for rapid and chemical-free disinfection of high infection-prone areas.
- This equipment is also known as UV Blaster. It is useful for high tech surfaces like electronic equipment, computers and other gadgets in laboratories and offices that are not suitable for disinfection with chemical method.
- This product is also effective for areas with large flow of people such as airports, shopping malls, metros, hotels, factories and offices,
UV DISINFECTANT TOWER
- This equipment uses ultra violet light to disinfect surfaces. For a room of about 12×12 feet dimension, the disinfection time is about 10 minutes, while for a 400 square feet area, it would take 30 minutes by positioning the equipment at different places within the room.
ULTRA SWACHH
- DRDO developed a disinfectant chamber named Ultra Swachh to disinfect a wide range of materials including PPEs, electronic items and fabrics.
- The system uses ozone as disinfectant which is produced in the chamber by multiple barrier disruption approach.
DRUVS
- DRDO also developed a novel disinfectant box to disinfect the mobile phones and currency notes
- These DRUVS(Dubbed Defence Research Ultraviolet Sanitizer) cabinets work automatically and without involving human contact.
- The proximity sensors detect human presence, following which the drawer of the cabinet opens, allowing you to drop in the items needing disinfection.
- After that, the drawer closes and the device exposes the products to shortwave ultraviolet light to kill all the germs and micro-organisms they might be carrying
DRDO DESERVES ACCOLADES FOR ITS EFFORTS
- In last few months DRDO have reoriented itself to fight against the Covid19 spread.
- Satheesh Reddy, chairman of the DRDO, recently said that “The scientific fraternity has felt the need of the hour and wants to use existing skills to create spin off technologies. We are coming out with quick solutions and products. Scientists have been working day and night to rise to the occasion,”.
