DETAILS
- The North-Western city of Seattle has seen of the fiercest clashes with police since the Black Lives Matter protest movement began.
- As a result, the city’s police force and local government ceded ground to the protestors on June 8th, giving them an area to peacefully protest without the chance of violence breaking out between police and protestors.
- This has led to the creation of what is being known as the Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone, or Chaz for short.
THEY HAVE RELEASED A CHARTER WITH SPECIFIC DEMANDS.
- Local governance in the Zone is decentralized, with the goal of creating a neighborhoodwithout police.
- Purported demands associated with the Zone include rent control, the reversal of gentrification, the abolition or defunding of police, funding of community health, and the dropping of charges against those arrested for involvement in the protests.
