EMIRATES MARS MISSION
- Spacecraft Hope (Arabic: , الأمل Al Amal The Amal Mars Mission or Hope Mars Mission is
- the first ever interplanetary mission to Mars led by any West Asian, Arab or Muslim majority country.
- The probe will orbit the planet Mars to study its atmosphere.
RACE TO MARS CHINA VS UAE
- The Japanese rocket carrying the probe developed by the UAE lifted off from the Tanegashima Space Centre
- in southern Japan Hope is scheduled to reach Mars in February 2021
- Amal is set to reach Mars in February 2021 , the year the UAE celebrates 50 years since the country’s Tianwen 1
- The mission is planned to be launched on 23 July 2020 with a Long March 5 heavy lift rocket

DETAILS
- The minimum distance from the Earth to Mars is about 33.9 million miles ( 54.6 million kilometres).
- But these two probes will travel far more than that as they will not be taking the shortest route
EMIRATES MARS MISSION
- The mission was announced by Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the President of the United Arab
- Emirates , in July 2014
- The spacecraft orbiter is a mission to Mars to study the Martian atmosphere and climate built by the
- Mohammed bin Rashid Space Centre , University of Colorado Boulder , Arizona State University, and
- University of California, Berkeley.
ISRO’S HELP
- The United Arab Emirates Space Agency and ISRO set up a joint working group regarding this mission in 2019
WHY THE NAME HOPE?
- The name Hope (Arabic: al Amal) was chosen because “it sends a message of optimism to
- millions of young Arabs “, according to Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Ruler of the emirate of Dubai for whom the lead space center , the Mohammed bin Rashid Space Centre
- (MBRSC), of the United Arab Emirates, is LAUNCH
- The Hope probe was launched from Japan in July 2020 and it will take seven months to arrive at Mars

DETAILS
- Hope will carry instruments to study the upper atmosphere and monitor climate change on Mars. It is
- scheduled to circle the red planet for at least two years. The UAE says it will provide a complete view of

- A newcomer in space development, the UAE has so far successfully launched three observation satellites, but has not gone beyond the Earth s orbit.
COST?
- The Amal spacecraft, along with its launch, cost 200 million, according to Sharaf. Operation costs at Mars have yet to be divulged
