who is Gunjan Saxena?

Flight lieutenant Gunjan Saxena was the first Indian Air Force woman officer who went to war.
She made history during the Kargil war in 1999 when, as a flying officer, she flew a Cheetah aircraft into the combat zone and rescued several soldiers.
She joined the Delhi Flying Club at Safdarjung for aviation training and
In 1994, joined the Indian Air Force along with 24 other women–the first batch of women for training in the IAF.
Her first posting was in Udhampur, as part of the 132 Forward Area Control (FAC).
Then only 25, was asked to fly in Srinagar & she agreed, before making history as the only woman pilot in combat.
During Kargil, the IAF pilot had a close shave when an enemy missile missed her aircraft and crashed behind it.
She, however, continued with her duties.
Gunjan was later honoured with the Shaurya Chakra for displaying courage and grit during the war.

The Indian Air Force (IAF), in a letter addressed to
The Central Board Of Film Certification (CBFC),
Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions, and
The streaming platform releasing the film,
Said that it finds certain scenes in the trailer of Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl objectionable.
The letter further adds, that while Karan Johar promised to “represent Indian Air Force with authenticity and make all efforts to ensure that the film helps to inspire the next generation of IAF officers”,
The trailer tells a different story.

“It is the very training of the Indian Air Force and the strong ethos of the Indian Air Force, which really gave me the courage to do all those extraordinary things that I could.”
“Comparing her real life with the portrayal in the film, said she had the support of fellow officers, supervisors, and commanding officers.
“Equal opportunities were there for me to perform, and I think they are still there for all the women officers who are in this organisation.
We don’t need any other or bigger proof than the fact that over the last 20 years the number of women officers in the Indian Air Force has gone up at such a high rate.”

Indian Air Force is first amongst the three services to grant commission to women officers in branches other than the medical branch.
Also now all branches of IAF are open for both genders including the Fighter stream of Flying Branch.
There are more than 1500 women officers in IAF now.
In 1992, doors for women officers were opened for service of 10 years.
In 2006, it was extended to 14 years.
But no pension was allowed to women as they served for less than 20 years.
In 2010, Delhi HC gave the ruling to allow women officers in permanent commission.
In 2015, IAF allowed the women officers for fighter pilots.
