MULTI CULTURAL SWEDEN

- A 2017 Pew Research report documents Muslim population at 8.1% of the total population of Sweden of 10 million (approximately 810,000).
WHAT LED TO RECENT RIOTS
- Far-right Danish party Stram Kurs (Hard Line) wanted to do a meeting in Malmo, Sweden
- Party’s leader Rasmus Paludan was denied permission to hold a meeting in Malmo about “Islamization in the Nordic countries”
STRAM KURS
- It was founded in 2017 by Rasmus Paludan and is known for its openly anti-Islam stance. Much of the party’s agenda focuses on building an anti-Islam narrative and engaging in acts that are provocative and offensive towards Islam and Muslims.
- The party uses social media platforms and public gatherings to further their agenda.
NOT MUCH FOLLOWING
- It is not known how many members the party has, but it did try to contest the 2019 Danish general election, gaining only a handful of votes. In the summer of 2019, the party had managed to secure the 20,000 voter signatures it had required to contest the parliamentary elections.
WHY MALMO?
WHAT LED TO RECENT RIOTS
- Protests began after a copy of the Quran was burned in Malmo by members of the far-right Danish party Stram Kurs (Hard Line).
- Earlier in the day, the party’s leader Rasmus Paludan was denied permission to hold a meeting in Malmo about “Islamization in the Nordic countries”
RASMUS PALUDAN
- Paludan later put up a scathing message on Facebook
- “Sent back and banned from Sweden for two years. However, rapists and murderers are always welcome!” he wrote.
- Paludan last year attracted media attention for burning a Koran wrapped in bacon –a meat that is anathema for Muslims.
