The News
- India and China have been embroiled in a bitter standoff from last few months in the Ladakh sector.
- We need to understand the nature of Chinese policies. To comprehend the aggressive behaviour of the CPC leadership, it is important to understand the symbiotic relationship between CPC and PLA.
- We also need to understand the nature of the generational transformation in the Chinese army.
The History of PLA
- PLA traces its roots to the ‘Nanchang Uprising’ of August 1, 1927. On this day the Communists led by stalwarts like Mao Zedong, Zhou Enlai and Zhu De rose against the nationalist forces.
- Initially called the Red Army, it grew under Mao Zedong and Zhu De from 5,000 troops in 1929 to 200,000 in 1933.
- In 1933, the red army retreated to evade the pursuit of the Kuomintang (Chinese Nationalist Party) army. It is more famously known as “LONG MARCH”.
Strange relationship..!!
- It is very normal for a nation to have an army.
- But its whole another thing & extremely rare for a political party to have one.
- China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) is an example of such army because it owes allegiance to the Communist Party of China (CPC).
Strange relationship..!!
- 1929: In the meeting of the CPC at Fujian province Mao Zedong said, The Red Army and its role were “to chiefly serve the political ends of CPC”.
- 2014: President Xi Jinping during his address to ‘Military Political Work Conference’ at Fujian, reiterated that the “PLA remains the Party’s army, and must maintain absolute loyalty to political masters”.
