- Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), ally of Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA), parted ways on the issue of farm bills which were recently passed by Parliament.
- ‘All must unite against Centre’, says SAD The BJP government at the Centre has said that these landmark legislations will make farmers self-reliant.
- The SAD had sought from the BJP-led central government not to bring the bills in Parliament till “all reservations” expressed by farmers are “duly addressed”.
- But when the Centre did not pay heed, the Akali Dal asked it to send these farm bills to a select committee which was also not accepted.
- Thereafter, Harsimrat Kaur Badal resigned from the Union Cabinet in protest against the bills.
What did the SAD say?
- “The Central government completely ignored the sentiments of farmers and pushed the agriculture sector Bills with force. What happened in Rajya Sabha… everybody knows that… Although we were part of the government, Harsimrat Kaur Badal quit from the post of Minister in protest against the Bills. I discussed the issue with people and leaders, and today we have decided to part ways with NDA,”
3 rd Major Party to Pull out of NDA
- With this, the SAD became the third major NDA member to pull out of the grouping after the Shiv Sena and the Telugu Desam Party (TDP).
- TDP: March 2018
- Shiv Sena: November 2019
- Akali Dal: September 2020
- Note: SAD joined the NDA in 1996 when BJP leader Atal Bihari Vajpayee became the prime minister during the alliance’s first government at the Centre, which lasted 13 days.
JDU with BJP (Only Big Ticket Party)
- The only major political party which is in alliance with BJP across north India is the Janata Dal (United) or JD(U)
Was Farm Bills the only reason for Akalis?
- The problems between the BJP and the Akali Dal began much before the farm Bills.
- The BJP’s decision not to spare any seats for the Akalis in the Delhiü Assembly polls,
- to the Akalis’ criticism of the Citizenship Amendment Act.ü
- Farm Bills acted as the trigger point. Akalis did not want to lose outü on their farmers votebank in Punjab in 2022 Elections.
What lies ahead for Punjab?
- For the Akalis
- The Akali Dal will try to go back to where it was in the 1980s – presenting itself as the main party in Punjab. An alliance with the BSP is another possibility as the two parties were allies for a brief while before the SAD joined hands with BJP.
- For the BJP
- The BJP will also now be compelled to expand on its own in Punjab.
