  • Agarwood is used as an incense and for producing an essential oil or ‘attar‘ (prepared by distillation of the wood) used for perfumes.
  • The spent wood, which still contains about 25% of oil is used for making ‘agarbatties‘ which also contain binders and other added odoriferous constituents.
  • Agar is used in world class perfumeries as a fixative and is highly prized by European perfumers for mixing their best grade scents.
  • It acts as a stimulant, cardio tonic and carminative, aphrodisiac, alternative anodyne, anti-diarrheal, anti-asthmatic and astringent.
  • The powdered wood is used medicinally and as a preventative against fleas and lice.
  • Agar (Aquilaria agallocha Roxb) are found in Sibsagar, Sadiya, Nagaon, Darrang, Goalpara and Cachar in Assam, Khasi Hills and Garo Hills districts of Meghalaya state and also in the forests of Nagaland, Manipur, Tripura and Arunachal Pradesh in the region.
  • The distillation industry is mainly confined to the Sibsagar and Dhansiri Valley Forest Division of Assam. Hojai in Assam, which is nearly 100km away from Guwahati is the hub of distilling the agar oil.
  • As Agar wood was classified under the wood based industries cutting of Agar tree was not allowed and there was requirement of registration for sending the same outside. The illegal Agar trade was rampant.
  • Assam government in 2019 approved growing and cutting of Agar and Chandan trees on non-forest lands.
  • This was done to promote cultivation of Agar and Chandan in the state.
  • The government also allowed the plantation and sale of Agar on upto five hectares of land.

  • There was a long felt need for an Agar Trade Centre in the state as the new trade centre would significantly help the farmers and entrepreneurs of Agar to sell their products.
