ISRO Launched Two British Satellites | Burning Issue | Free PDF Download

PSLV-C42 LAUNCHES 2 FOREIGN SATELLITES

  • ISROs PSLV-C42 lifted off for the launch of two satellites from the United Kingdom – NovaSAR and S1-4 from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre.
  • The two satellites, owned by Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd (SSTL) were placed in a circular orbit around the poles, 583 km from Earth.

 NOTES

  • The commercial arm of ISRO, Antrix Corporation earned more than ₹220 crore on this launch.
  • This would be the 44th flight of the PSLV and the third launch by ISRO this year. The PSLV-C-42 is the lightest version of the PSLV flying in its core-alone version without the six strap-on motors.

With this launch, Antrix, Isro’s commercial arm, will earn upwards of Rs 200 crore. “We have an order book of Rs 980 crore, with Rs 500-600 crore contracts in pipeline for launch services in this fiscal (2018-19) and next fiscal (2019-2020),” S Rakesh, Antrix chairman-cum-managing director Till now, Isro has launched 239 foreign satellites of 28 countries. Isro is, therefore, making all efforts to be competitive and wants to launch more and more commercial satellites to capture a lion’s share of the global market.

  • Not the first time ISRO has done a fully commercial PSLV Satellite Launch

WHAT IS THE NOVASAR-1 SATELLITE FOR?

  • NovaSAR-1 is a technology demo mission satellite developed by Airbus.
  • It will test SSLT’s ability to provide earth observation and disaster management data for bidding customers.
  • NovaSAR’s communication frequency falls under the ‘S band’, a microwave region in the electromagnetic spectrum between 2 and 4 GHz in frequency. This is the most widely-used band for mobile broadband, weather monitoring and ship radars worldwide.

WHAT IS THE S1-4 SATELLITE FOR?

  • It’s companion for the launch, the S1-4 satellite, is a highresolution Earth observation satellite.
  • It can capture images of multiple different targets in a single pass above an area, the release says.
  • All this clicking away at an impressive image resolution of under one meter.The satellite is designed for use in urban planning, land use and agriculture, as well as natural resource and disaster monitoring.

 POLAR SATELLITE LAUNCH VEHICLE

  • Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) is the third generation launch vehicle of India. It is the first Indian launch vehicle to be equipped with liquid stages.
