  • India’s first domestic cruise Angriya to start operations between Mumbai and Goa
  • The Cruise is named after the first Maratha Navy Admiral Kanhoji Angre.

WHO OWNS IT?

  • The cruise ship Angriya, is owned by Angriya Sea Eagle Pvt Ltd, a subsidiary of the Goan ecotourism company, Sea Eagle Cruises. The company have been around in the Goan tourism market for more than 7 years.

GOVERNMENT’S ROLE?

  • India will get to experience the concept of luxury cruise for the first time. The government has been pushing to promote tourism through concepts like these through its ambitious Sagarmala Project.
  • The industry has its own set of expectations from the government, especially about tedious process to obtain permissions.

SAGAR MALA PROJECT

  • For promoting tourism in maritime states under Sagarmala, projects have been identified in convergence with Ministry of Tourism and tourism development departments of maritime state governments.
  • Key coastal tourism projects include:
  1. Development of Coastal Circuits under Swadesh Darshan Scheme of Ministry of Tourism
  2. Development of infrastructure for promoting Cruise tourism
  3. Development of lighthouses
  4. National Maritime Heritage Museum Complex at Lothal
  5. Underwater viewing gallery and restaurant at Beyt Dwarka

The luxury cruise has 104 rooms, divided into eight different categories The Cruise can accommodate 400 passengers along with 70 crew members.

NOTES

  • At full speed, it usually takes around 8 hours to reach Goa, but Angria will sail at a leisurely pace and reach Goa in 14 hours so that the passengers can have a good time onboard.
  • And finally, the price. A ticket for this heaven on waves will cost between Rs 7,000 to Rs 12,000 per person.

 INDIANS ON CRUISE

  • Out of over 2.6 crore Indians who travelled abroad in 2017, less than 1.5 lakh went on a cruise.
  • However, the trend is catching on and that number is likely to go up to 2 lakh this year.

THE OPPORTUNITY

  • India got just 128 port calls by cruise liners in 2017 compared to almost 2,400 at Japanese ports, over 1,100 at Chinese ports and 187 at ports in Indonesia, a country much smaller than India.
  • While India has a huge coastline of over 7,500 km and a network of ports and tourist destinations along the coast, it suffers from a lack of facilities.

RECENTLY UP CRUISE SHIP WAS IN THE NEWS TOO

  • Alaknanda, a 5-star luxury tourist cruise, embarked on its maiden trip in Varanasi on Sunday.
  • Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath inaugurated the ‘water pilgrimage’ on Ganga which is likely to be a big tourist attraction in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s constituency.
