Andhra Pradesh To Get New Railway Zone

  • The new zone will comprise the existing Guntakal, Guntur and Vijayawada divisions that currently fall under the South Central Railway.

Indian Railways showcased its tableau in prestigious Republic Day Parade this year with the theme “Mohan se Mahatma”

  • On the 70th Republic Day, the tableau of Indian Railways illustrated an evolutionary journey of Mahatma Gandhi .
  • The “transformation of Mohan Das Karam Chand Gandhi to Mahatma Gandhi”. The incident in 1893, when the young Mohan Das was thrown out of a “European only” compartment at Pietermaritzburg railway station in South Africa, acted as a catalyst for him to practice ‘Satyagrah’.
  • The front portion of tableau shows a steam engine on whose top is perched a bust of Mahatma Gandhi which is similar to the bust installed in June 2018 at the Pietermaritzburg railway station of South Africa.
  • In the rear portion of the tableau, Mahatma Gandhi is shown collecting donations for the ‘Harijan Fund’ during his train journey to Bengal, Assam and South India, carried out between November 1945 to January 1946.

  • The special tourist train would commence its journey on April 14, the birth anniversary of Dr Ambedkar, from Nagpur, Maharashtra.

The train is meant to honour Lord Buddha and BR Ambedkar

Ramayana Express

  • First time shown GREEN FLAG from Safdarjung Railway Station, Delhi
  • 14 November, 2018
  • It will travel to all the places associated with Ramayana
  • Last stop is Rameshwaram in Tamil Nadu
  • After departing from Delhi, the train will make its first stop at Ayodhya followed by Hanuman Garhi Ramkot and Kanak Bhawan temple. Destinations like Nandigram, Sitamarhi, Janakpur, Varanasi, Prayag, Shringverpur, Chitrakoot, Nasik, Hampi and Rameshwaram will be covered by the train.

‘Total Cleanliness Survey’ conducted by the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC)

  • North Western Railway (NWR), is the cleanest railway zone in the ‘Premium’ category trains and South Central Railway finished at the bottom
  • Southern Railway is the cleanest among the ‘Other than Premium’ category’ trains while the East Central Railway was the dirtiest in this group
  • Rajdhani, Shatabdi, Duronto, Tejas and Gatiman are categorized as the ‘Premium’ trains while Sampark Kranti, Intercity, Jan Shatabdi other Mail and Express trains were grouped under the ‘Other than Premium’ category.
  • Out of 26 Shatabdi trains, the Pune-Secunderabad Shatabdi was adjudged as the cleanest train, followed by the Howrah-Ranchi and Delhi-Kanpur Shatabdis.
  • The Kochuveli-Chandigarh Sampark Kranti was the cleanest among the 20 Sampark Kranti trains
  • The KSR Bengalaru-Ernakulam train topped among the 20 Intercity services.
  • Out of the 23 Rajdhanis surveyed, the Mumbai Rajdhani emerged on top
  • The survey’s stated aim was to assess the progress of the ‘Swachh Rail-Swachh Bharat’ mission and promote healthy competition among trains.
