AGASTHYAMALA BIOSPHERE RESERVE
- ABR straddles the border of Pathanamthitta, Kollam and Thiruvananthapuram Districts in Kerala and Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari Districts in Tamil Nadu, South India at the southern end of the Western Ghats.
- Agasthyamalai Biosphere Reserve became part of World Network of Biosphere Reserves in 2016.
- Is also under UNESCO’s world list of biosphere reserve
- The Indian government has established 18 biosphere reserves in India, which protect larger areas of natural habitat, and often include one or more National Parks or preserves, along with buffer zones that are open to some economic uses.
SATHYAMANGALAM WILDLIFE SANCTUARY
- Sathyamangalam Wildlife Sanctuary and Tiger Reserve is a protected area and tiger reserve along the Western Ghats in the Erode District of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu.
- First declared as a wildlife sanctuary in 2008 and enlarged in 2011, it covers a forest area of 1,411.6 km2 (545.0 sq mi) and is the largest wildlife sanctuary in Tamil Nadu.
- In 2013, it became the fourth tiger reserve as a part of Project Tiger in the state of Tamil Nadu.
SATHYAMANGALAM TIGER RESERVE
- Sathyamangalam tiger reserve in Erode district of Tamil Nadu received the best managed tiger reserve award from the Union ministry of environment, forest and climate change.
- Forest officials said the 1,400 sq km area was declared as a tiger reserve in 2013, with two divisions – Hasanur and Sathyamangalam. After the formation, 32 anti-poaching camps were started, which are functioning even today to carry out protection work in the critical tiger areas.
SAINT PETERSBURG TIGER SUMMIT IN RUSSIA
- Saint Petersburg Tiger Summit in Russia in 20 1 0, to raise awareness about decline of global tiger population. Signatories declared an agreement that governments of tiger- populated countries would double animal’s population by 2022.

- PM Modi released the tiger estimation figures on Monday and said that India has achieved the target of doubling the tiger count four years ahead of the deadline.
- The country now has 2,967 tigers, which has been the result of a growth of 33 per cent in the fourth cycle of the Tiger Census.
DETAILS
- As mentioned in the Tiger Census, Madhya Pradesh has the highest number of tigers at 526, followed by Karnataka at 524 and Uttarakhand at 442.
- However, not all is rosy in Chhattisgarh and Mizoram that have seen a decline in the numbers. Odisha maintained its tiger count.
