EARLY LIFE

  • Ranjan Gogoi was born on 18 november 1954 in Dibrugarh. His father is Kesab Chandra Gogoi, an Indian National Congress politician who served as Chief Minister of Assam for two months in 1982.
  • Gogoi attended Don Bosco school in Dibrugarh before moving to Delhi to complete pre-university studies. He then studied at St. Stephen’s College, Delhi, graduating with honours in history, before attending Delhi University, where he received a law degree.

LEGAL CAREER

  • He also appeared for the UPSC examination so as to keep the wish of his father and even cracked it. But then he told his father politely that in order to keep his wish he cracked the examination and wants to become an Advocate instead.
  • Gogoi enrolled at the bar in 1978, and practiced at the Gauhati High Court, where he was made a Permanent Judge on 28 February 2001.
  • He was transferred to the Punjab and Haryana High Court on 9 September 2010, becoming its Chief Justice on 12 February 2011. On 23 April 2012, he was elevated as a Judge of the Supreme Court.

CJI(NOTABLE CASES)

  • On 3 October 2018, he was appointed as Chief Justice of India, succeeding Dipak Misra.
  • 2019 Supreme Court verdict on Ayodhya dispute: On 09 November 2019, Ranjan Gogoi and four other Supreme Court judges gave the verdict regarding the land dispute of Ayodhya Ram Janambhoomi-Babri Masjid title dispute case.
  • On people who are originally inhabitants of the state of Assam.

  • On Govindaswamy vs State of Kerala
  • Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, asking him to increase the Supreme Court’s current sanctioned strength of 31 judges, ostensibly to tackle the continuing rise in pendency of cases.
  • The court, which began with a sanctioned strength of eight judges, saw the number of judges rise to 11 in 1956, 14 in 1960, 18 in 1978, 26 in 1986 and 31 in 2008.

CONTRVERSY

  • A former employee of the Supreme Court of India accused the chief justice of India, Ranjan Gogoi, of sexual harassment and persecution.
  • The former employee describes two incidents of molestation by Gogoi in her affidavit, both of which allegedly took place in October 2018, only days after he was appointed to India’s highest judicial office

CONTRVERSY

  • Four senior judges of the Supreme Court today mounted a virtual revolt against the chief justice, listing a litany of problems that they said are afflicting the country’s highest court and warned they could destroy Indian democracy.
  • Substantively, they had raised two major concerns – first, regarding the manner in which then Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dipak Misra was constituting benches for important cases, and second, regarding finalisation of the Memorandum of Procedure (MoP) for appointment of judges which was still pending with the government.

PENDING CASES

  • Chief Justice Dipak Misra sounded the alarm on rising pendency at a time when the situation is almost getting out of hand with the backlog touching 3.3 crore cases.
  • While 2.84 crore cases are pending in the subordinate courts, the backlog clogging the High Courts and Supreme Court (SC) is 43 lakh and 57,987 cases, respectively.
  • According to National Judicial Data Grid (NJDG), the five states which account for the highest pendency are Uttar Pradesh (61.58 lakh), Maharashtra (33.22 lakh), West Bengal (17.59 lakh), Bihar (16.58 lakh) and Gujarat (16.45 lakh).
