Kashi-Mahakal Express
- The train will run from Varanasi to Indore and connect three major Jyotirlingas –
- Omkareshwar, Near Indore
- Mahakaaleshwar, Ujjain
- Kashi Vishwanath, Varanasi
- The train will cover a total distance of 1131 km between Varanasi and Indore via Lucknow And a distance of 1102 km between Varanasi and Indore via Prayagraj (Allahabad) in approximately 19 hours.
Highlights of the train
- It will be third train to be run by the IRCTC, a subsidiary of the Indian Railways, on corporate model.
- Modern amenities, superfast ,fully air-conditioned passenger train
- Will run three days a week
- First run – 16th Feb 2020
- Regular services – 20th Feb onwards

Kashi Vishwanath Temple
- The Vishwanath temple has been subject to several demolitions.
- The original temple was destroyed in 1194 by Qutb-ud-din Aibak.
- It was rebuilt but destroyed again in the 15th century(sometime during during the Lodhi dynasty) .
- Raja Man singh of Amer rebuilt the temple during Akbar’s rule.
- In1669, Aurangzeb destroyed the temple and on its ruins, he built a mosque, called the Gyan Vapi mosque, which incorporated one wall of the old temple.
- In 1780, the Maratha queen of Indore, Ahilyabai Holkar, constructed the present-day temple, few metres from the mosque.
The controversy
- The railway staff had converted seat number 64 in coach B5 for Lord Shiva
- The IRCTC later said a seat was reserved for Lord Shiva in the Kashi Mahakal Express during its inaugural run as a “one-time affair” to seek “blessings”
- The train staff had “temporarily put the photos of Shri Mahakaal” on an upper berth during the inaugural run on Sunday to perform pooja, the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) said in a statement.

- IRCTC is making tour packages of cities and religious sites covered by the train such as Kashi, Omkareshwar, Mahakaleshwar, Bhopal, Sanchi, Ujjain, Bhimbetka, Ayodhya and Prayag.
